Things I Wish I Would Have Added to My New-Build Home
Building a home is an exciting process filled with big decisions, but it’s often the smaller, everyday details that reveal themselves once you’ve moved in. Living in a new build is incredibly rewarding, but there are a few features I left out when building my custom home that I now realize would have made daily life even more functional and enjoyable. These aren’t major structural overhauls, they’re thoughtful additions that are easiest to include during construction and much harder to add later.
Filtered Hot Water Tap in the Kitchen
While a filtered cold water tap is common, having instant filtered hot water would have been a game changer. From making tea and coffee to quickly blanching vegetables or filling pots, it’s one of those conveniences that saves time throughout the day. Retrofitting later can be costly and complicated, making this a feature worth planning for upfront.
Outlets in All Closets
Closets are no longer just for storage. They’re where we charge vacuums, steam clothes, plug in shoe dryers, or store small appliances. Adding outlets inside every closet would have eliminated extension cords and made these spaces far more functional. It’s a simple electrical addition that pays off daily.
Outlets Inside Vanity Drawers
Outlets inside bathroom vanity drawers keep counters clear while allowing hair tools, toothbrushes, and grooming devices to stay plugged in and hidden away. Without them, cords tend to clutter the space or require constant plugging and unplugging. This is a small detail that makes a bathroom feel cleaner, calmer, and better designed.
Dividers in Kitchen Drawers
Kitchen drawers look generous on paper, but without built-in dividers, they can quickly become chaotic. Custom dividers for utensils, spices, and cookware help everything stay organized and easy to access. Including these during cabinetry planning ensures drawers function as beautifully as they look.
More Floor Outlets
Floor outlets are often overlooked, but once furniture is in place, they become incredibly valuable. Lamps, charging stations, and seasonal décor all benefit from conveniently placed power sources. Having more floor outlets would have reduced reliance on wall outlets and visible cords, especially in larger living spaces.
More Windows
No matter how many windows a home has, it’s hard to ever feel like you have enough. Additional windows bring in more natural light, improve airflow, and create a stronger connection to the outdoors. Even small or strategically placed windows can dramatically change how a space feels, and they’re one of the hardest elements to add after the fact.
The Takeaway
These are the kinds of features that don’t always make it onto the initial must-have list, but they shape how a home functions long-term. If I were building again, I’d focus even more on how each space is used day to day and plan for those needs early. Thoughtful details like these may seem minor during construction, but they’re often the things homeowners miss, and appreciate, the most once the house becomes a home.
